Flavius Jovianus was the son of a highly regarded officer who had risen to become captain of Constantius II's personal bodyguard. He was born around 331 in Illyria, making him roughly the same age as Julian. There are two interesting things to note about Jovian's rise on the ranks that speak to Julian's character.
