The Mystery of Compassion
There was a long terrible battle of roaring and hissing the serpent, elephant trumpeting. All of the seamen ran into the jungle and threw themselves down on the ground covering their ears with their hands as if the world were coming to an end. The merchants went down and they built a great pyre on the beach and on it with all honors they placed the body of the lion and the elephant. They wondered as they prayed and thanked these animals why it was that those two animals came to save them. This is a story that was told by the Buddha to his monks and still today we wonder he said.
