Privacy is not just something that has to be balanced against free speech. It's a precondition for free speech, he says. If we're not sure that anything is private, that itself is massively inhibiting to free speech. What Google and Facebook in particular know about you and me goes way beyond the shtarsi general's wildest dreams. And it becomes doubly dangerous when they are covertly sharing that information with the NSA or GCHQ.
