In a multiple regression, let's say that you have two observed variables and let's call them X and Z predicting why. You can capture the interaction by simply taking the product of X and Z. Kenny and Judd said what if we just took the cross products of the indicators across the two factors? It was about the time when I had my area 51 poster up in my dorm.
