The idea that we're being controlled by these platforms is really just a byproduct of a belief in digital creationism. Each piece of software that shows up in this ecosystem is a mutation of some previous piece of software. That process is driving the development of the technology much more than the deliberate decision-making of individuals. Wikipedia has arguably reproduced very prolifically, serving lots of people around the world.
