Florence and the Scotari Barracks Hospital in Turkey

Florence Nightingale was sent to a hospital in Turkey during the Crimean War. The military hospitals were so filthy and unhygienic that 4,000 patients died from diseases there. She took it very seriously and introduced animals such as a tortoise called Jimmy. Most famously she walked for miles around all the hospital beds checking on her patients with a lamp to guide her in the dark.
