The n r a has done a very good job over the last few decades trying to make membership in the n ra synonymous with being a gun owner. It wanted to be that organization that stood between the government and its members on all sorts of issues unrelated to guns. After sandyhook, after the shooting at sandy hook, the enne ray kind of made itself into a culture war organization.
