The C.S. Lewis podcast

CHAPTER

Is There a Difference Between Looking at and Looking Along?

Too often we think of our Christian faith as in effect an objective body of knowledge. What Lewis is trying to say is no, no, no. It draws us in. In effect makes us see things in a different way. We relate to them in a way that's not detached. It's same gaze but involved. That's very characteristic of Lewis. This analogy helps him to make that point very clearly. He likens it to various things that you could study objectively, if you like. Sociologically you could study the dance of a particular tribe in Africa and explain it in that sense. You're not having the same experience.
