In his last work, which he called a positivist catechism, Comte laid down the first explicit theory of social debt. In hs lifetime, comte was considered something of a crack pot, but his ideas proved influential. We have already accumulated endless debts before we get to the age at which we can even think of repaying them. By that time, there is no way to calculate to whom we even owe them.
