The Struggle of Art and Literature

Marcuse says art stands against history with Stan's history, which has been the history of oppression. So what he's saying here is that art is what challenges the oppressions of real art. That it even when it depicts established reality, it does so in a way to negates its country. It lifts up and it exposes its contradictions and negates the oppression, and leads to liberation.
