The Importance of Getting to Know the People

Anthropologists spend a long time getting to know a place and a people. They gradually build up trust and they gradually get people to talk to them about things, which they wouldn't learn about straight away. Can you say something about your field research in Tibet? It's come up a few times, but you did your doctoral work actually traveling to Tibet and doing original research on their legal system. First of all, what was that like just getting to go there and see some of this stuff up close and personal? Well, it was great. It's one of the best years of my life.
