The Importance of Persuasion

In 1515, Andrea Alasati condemned witch hunts that had taken place in the Italian Alps. The humanist scholar Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettusheim risked his life by coming into the defense of an old woman accused of witchcraft. Humanism accepted that demons in the devil had power in the world but disavowed excessive legal prosecutions and overzealous prosecutors who pursued innocent victims. Their efforts would lead to a decrease in both the pursuit of belief in witches and accusations of witchcraft.
