The maroons of the dismal swamp were just as free or more free than a lot of other Americans, you know, black or white. They lived this life that was in many ways controlled by the limitations of living in a swamp. But at the end of the day, each and every person that lived their lives in the swamp was choosing consciously every day to live there rather than live enslaved. And I think this title really brings those those distinctions together in a way that makes people think differently about freedom," she says.
