There have been a number of cases where scientists were interviewed and said that's why I went into the field. Specific science of the story inspired research that later made it sort of happen. First thing to come to mind for tragically obvious reasons is Greg bears blood music, which won all sorts of awards. And he was the heart of us killer bees Greg Benford, David Bren and Greg Bear.
