Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Wayman on February 21, 1933. She was something of a child prodigy and encouraged to play the church organ. Her family and her local community pinned all their hopes on her being this black concert pianist. But when she was turned down to go to an institute, it was a wound from which she never recovered.
