Samuel Wertzel bought an IBM punch card equipment system to keep track of inventory and sales. He also adopted the IBM 360 computer system in the mid 60s to help manage the growing chain of stores. The Ward's company got into the discount industry by opening up departments in already existing stores. It was almost like a precursor to the shopping mall except it was a department space within a larger building.
