The Importance of LCD Displays in VR
Early VR headsets had an OLED display using a pen tile sub pixel arrangement. The spacing that they had in between the pixels as a result of having to use Fresnel lenses and basically magnify into these displays was something that they called the screen door effect. In order to pursue higher refresh rates, which are important to decrease nausea, you want the display to refresh at the rate that your eyeballs would expect the real world to. To get rid of that screen door effect, most VR headsets move over to LCD. But LCD comes with its own downsides: You can't get true blacks out of LCD.
