The Importance of the Desert in the Gulf War

The Gulf War was the largest US military deployment since Vietnam. John Avlon says many soldiers had no illusions about why they were deployed to a lifeless desert halfway across the world. The U.S. military in 1990 was unrecognizable from the military that over 15 years had limped out of the Vietnamese jungle, he says. Avlon: As thousands of well-armed, well-trained American soldiers marched off the tarmac and re-eyed every hour on the hour, one could not help but marvel at the radical transformation it had undergone.
