Green Energy in Shetland

The Viking wind farm in Shetland was sold to Islanders as a community owned project with the prospect of huge income down the line. But since 2019 it has been wholly owned by SSE renewables, a subsidiary of Perth-based SSE PLC. The shetland Trust which invested will get returns and SSE will pay into a community benefit fund for local projects worth £2.2 million a year. Green energy does not come out of thin air, just like its fossil fuel predecessor. It has to physically be somewhere. And once again Shetland is that somewhere.
