Ep 338: The Nuances of Intensive Care

The Seen and the Unseen - hosted by Amit Varma

CHAPTER

The Importance of Mental Health in ICUs

About 20 to 30 percent of my patients in ICU for the ophthalmic end up having to be referred to a psychologist or a psychotherapist because they have ongoing issues with what happened. And then you think about menstruating women who have their periods while they are in intensive care, while they are sedated. So, it is a significant thing that we do not talk about because we just ignore it. This is mind blowing to me. It's like the first time I'm hearing of this and yet it seems so logical and obviously, way, way worse for women and a man probably wouldn't even think of this angle. Absolutely.
