Peace and Truce of God
There was ideological tension and conflict within western christian society. Church teachings held violence and killing of any sort to be sinful. So a movement set rules limiting whom nobles could attack. They also called truces of god, which were specific times of the week or the year when nobles could not fight. This had greatly reduced the wanton raping and pillaging that had been going on through the dark ages.
