This is actually not a very uncommon way of vector transmission. It takes these tripan somes about three to five weeks, which is a really long time. This fly is very ong lived. From what i read, its life span is at least two to three months. And they blood feed every three days or so. Likely, largely because of this complexity, not only the complexity of the life cycle of this fly, but also the complex maturation process of these parasites within the fly.
