In 2020 there were 131 million emergency department visits in the US. Only around 14% of those visits resulted in the patient being admitted to the hospital. If you show up at the emergency room with a problem, the most likely outcome is that you'll be evaluated, treated and then sent home. Being there also means being the one to make some really tough calls.
