I don't think the left really worked through what went wrong in 1991 or 1989 whichever date you prefer I think 91. The collapse of state socialism and this one model that was repressive and authoritarian is a huge reason for the development of woke because it seemed to people that large scale universalist political projects had been proved hopeless if not wrong. Lack of reflection about what went wrong has led to this interning about defending my group figuring out my group identity and that about us.
