Is the Military a Natural Enemy of the Military Cabal?

I think it's legitimate to say that there's a period in modern warfare when the military is not home to the best and the brightest. If you were a brilliant young mind in England in 1914, you did not go into the army. And what happens is that World War II in particular makes the military shape again for the intellectually curious. That kind of revolution where some of the finest minds reside in the military world because this war is just about the hardest problem we have to tackle as a society.
