Is There a Culture of Self Censorship in Universities?
There is now a kind of political homogeneity, that didn't really exist before. That wasn't true even in my first ten years of teaching at harvard. The second thing that's happened is that universities have become very bloated institutions with large administrative staffs outnumber the academic faculty. And then a culture has arisen among students, which has been encouraged by s administrators, of self censorship or denunciation - so that people are afraid to say what they think.
