The jury returned with a verdict of murder in the first degree, but recommending that the accused be punished by imprisonment. Defence attorney, doctor rucker entered a motion for a new trial, but this was withdrawn the next morning. The evidence was entirely circumstantial. All who heard the evidence are satisfied of the prisoner's guilt. People get convicted on circumstantial evidence all the time. You simply don't need a witness to give direct evidence in every case. This included testimony from edward himself.
