The Blinken Balloon Is Catalyzing the Debate About China

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was due to travel to Beijing for a meeting with Xi that was being described as this effort to sort of put a floor beneath the relationship, build strategic guardrails. But that was intended to be the exact weekend that this balloon was shot down. So Blinken's visit has been indefinitely postponed. The difficulty is that it's very hard to see how it can now go ahead given the political atmosphere. Both sides have effectively reverted to form. On the Chinese side, at first there was a very uncharacteristically conciliatory statement on the 3rd of February saying that they regretted that what they said was a civilian weather balloon had unintentionally entered US airspace
