All the major and credible Linux desktop projects are working on either improving Wayland or planning to drop X11 altogether. No one wants to work on X11 because it's a bunch of spaghetti code, no one really understands it all that well. For toolkits and desktops supporting X11 is just basically wasted time for your next version. And so yeah, X11 will die in a few years. Or at least it will be reserved to a very niche variety of Linux distros"
