The Boom in Latin Pop Crossover
Lopez and Shakira both remember how two decades ago it still seemed novel for performers of their heritage to be crossing over on the Anglophone American charts. Of course, it's not like Latin crossover was invented 20 years ago. Spanish language hits have been making remarkable appearances on the American charts since the dawn of rock and roll. What arguably changed this perception and led to a boom in Latin pop crossover on the Hot 100 came 21 years ago at the 1999 Grammy Awards.
