The Relationship Between Race and Racism
"Race did not give birth to racism. Racism gave birth to race," he says. "The ancestors of today's African Americans were not enslaved because they were black, but they became defined as black and as inferior" The way we understand what whiteness is is very different from the way 19th century thinkers saw whiteness and race,. This goes back to the issue of the relationship between race and racism. Race is a post-enlightenment concept; only in societies that have accepted the idea of equality do racial inequality make sense.
