Is This a Real Hellscape?
The movie also has a very sort of purgatorial like somebody stuck in this kind of hellscape that they have to come to some sort of recognition of their own guilt in order to pass from there into somewhere else. I feel like that idea has some kind of vague influence here even if it's not explicitly operating as kind of a metaphor for purgatory or something like that the landscape does sort of have this other worldly feel to it and they're on this island.
