In 1854, age 32, Dostoevsky was sent to prison and a labor camp in Siberia. While on his honeymoon, he suffered his first epileptic seizure. The incident had the effect of terrorizing sure, but also a giddy excitement at being still alive. One of the motivations for writing the book was financial: He was in debt perpetually.
