The history of St. Pierre and Martinique is like a perfect microcosm of both American colonialism and French politics rolled into one. In 1626, a French pirate by the name of Pierre Belonde's nombuque came to Paris. He wanted permission to create new French colonies in the Caribbean but that could only be accomplished through slave labor. Esquimbuch found a workaround in the person of Armand Jean-Duplesis, otherwise known as the infamous Cardinal Richelieu.
