The Role of Resting State in Brain Activity
For a long time, the dominant paradigm with functional brain imaging was to throw a task at someone and then you would see an increase or decrease in activation. But things started to change in around about the early 2000s, where people started to look at spontaneous brain activity. And when you're asking a big, broad question, like how does a drug that profoundly alters your conscious experience work in the brain, that's what you want to look at.
