Many people are converging on the idea that consciousness and related ideas like working memory have to do with our ability to zero in on relevant information. In general, communication is crucial to being an intelligent cognitive agent. We see this even in creatures that don't have linguistic communication. Social communication makes many species behave in a more sophisticated fashion.
