The Dignity of the Office and the Seriousness of Being Prime Minister
I didn't agree with his policies, but Neil Kinock once jokingly said to me, the best time to kick a man is when he's down. I thought Neil Kinner was a more considerable person than he was given credit for at the time. When you meet someone, you either are neutral about them, or you think this is quite a nice guy. And he was very supportive over the Gulf War. The purpose of holding the Prime Minister to account has long since gone. It's a carnival in which the Prime Minister tries to cheer up his troops and damage the opposition. He would wish to be a part of the conversation, but I would wish to look forward.
