How to Rethink Conference Funding Models

I like that idea of reframing conferences as gathering places for the communicating and sharing ideas. But we would need that culture change at an institutional level that will accept gathering as a legitimate reason for getting funding. I don't think that's a problem because you do submit something for peer review, it gets accepted. You get a screen minute slot in one of the parallel sessions to present your work in a fairly specialized session. It's where they've collected the papers that are sort of in the cluster of work that you do. So,. you know, it's a much larger number of people who are actually presenting papers and going, you know, appearing in the proceedings of the conference.
