How Did English Get Rid of Those Germanic Consonants?

English speakers just stopped pronouncing those breathy fricative sounds. At some point, they were considered awkward to people accustomed to the heavy influence of French words after 1066. These very Germanic sounds would have been stigmatized and frowned upon by many French speakers in Norman, England. But as we know, English lost those sounds over time. And that was part of the overall process by which English got rid of a lot of those Germanic consonants in the back of the throat.
