The History of Fujiko

In the early 12th century, people began to climb Mount Fuji as a religious act. During the Tokugawa Shogunate, samurai were trained at a remote camp on the slopes of Mount Fuji and archery competitions were often held there. At its peak, there were believed to be about 800,000 practitioners of Fujiko. It wasn't until the Meiji restoration that women were allowed to climb the mountain.
