If you're interested in patterns a bit deeper than just using the design patterns, then it's probably a good starting point to go to one of those conferences. The hillside group is basically the common basis of the pattern community. A good link to check out is hillside.net. You find all the information and follow-on links about the community, the patterns, books that have been written - almost everything about patterns.
