The Disentangling of Racism in America
Time makes the offense more acute or exacerbate the harm done, but it also bakes it into your life. The fact that racism was a part of America's history from the early 17th century to like the mid 19th century means that disentangling it from America becomes all more fraught and complicated. Some people have experienced this entirely differently in dramatic ways, whereas other people in the conversation haven't. And so when you come across and say something like, hey, we're on the same plane here, like we feel, I can speak as a white man that I don't have the same experience at all with slavery and racism."
