Is Gender a Social Position?
In my book, I say that gender is a social position. And there's a halo of norms that goes along with that. One view says you're only responsive to norms if they are part of your practical identity. So it's not that I'm saying you couldn't have a pro attitude or a negative attitude towards them. But that's not the first step. The first step is so when does the applicability of the norm to you kick in? Right. And to me, it kicks in by virtue of occupying a social position like being a mother.
