Crown Prosecution Service - Should the Police Have More Power to Authorise Charges?

Three chief constables from West Midlands, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire have called for the CPS to lose its sole power. This undermines the whole point of setting up the Crown Prosecution Service 35 years ago, doesn't it? The police currently charge 65% by volume of all cases; where there is a not guilty plea, it has to be us at the CPS who prosecute that case. There is a charging transformation model which is rolling across England and Wales as I speak. It's currently being operated in Mersey, Cheshire and across Wales. And I'm looking forward to seeing that roll right across all 43 police forces in England and Wales.
