There Is No Essence

Post modernist would say there is no essence. Well, there's several ways to handle that. One of the things is you're going to build a metaphysics out of something that consists of the not essence of things. But the other thing I want to come back to is this voluntary aspect of it. We might be talking about something that's produced as we go forward. More like a telos than an origin. So that biology on the earth did not start out with sex. It's something that life invented after a while. That doesn't mean it has no value or utility.
