Most of harlem was still white, yes. White residents who included native new yorkers and also immigrants from germany and eastern europe,. irish, italian, like we mention tose residents still outnumbered the african american population here in the early twentieth century. The big shops, for example, down on a hundred and 20 fifth street, they were still white owned. And many of the largest department stores too, like blumsteins, were famously rude to their black shoppers. All entertainment options that ran up and down 120 fifth street, including the stage that would become the apollo theatre, the ahertig and seaman's burlesque theatre
