CHAPTER

The Importance of Meaning in Language

According to Batsuhari, meaning in itself has no parts and is not subject to time. Only actual verbal utterances are affected by time since we need to speak one word after another - whereas a meaning can be represented in the mind all at once. Individual words have no meaning in their own right, but only come to signify in the context of a sentence. The sounds that make up a word, like jir and af, are not in themselves meaningful.
