China's Interest in the South Pacific
The Pacific used to be considered the American lake and the South Pacific surely is like a kind of pocket of that lake and should be completely locked down by the New Zealanders and Australians. I think what's happened is you know China has its age and the region has increased its diplomatic profile in recent years. There was a perception from American commentators that New Zealand Australia dropped the ball right but maybe we didn't it might change because the US are opening up New Zealand so on. The Solomon Islands signed a kind of security agreement with China last year that will allow the Chinese navy access to their port also apparently allows them free hand to push out into vulnerable regions.
