For thousands of years, the art of painting and sculpture were iconographic. They served mainly religious purposes - there was no such thing as fine art. As time went on, painters began to put landscape in the background because that's the way you see people. And then they fell in love with non symmetrical forms like clouds or trees. Nobody has ever accused a wave of making an aesthetic mistake.
