What Is the Meaning of a Widow?
A man's word was powerful enough to ruin a woman. Once divorced, she was left to destitution or to death by suicide. Chastity was considered one of the most desirable female traits. A woman's abstinence was looked upon as more valuable than her life. Widows were in fact given a special knife for suicide.
